Mathew R. Faber, 87, of Sioux City died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Al McCoy officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mathew Faber was born Sept. 15, 1917, in Remsen, Iowa, the son of Mathew and Emma (Wagner) Faber Sr. He attended St. Mary's Grade School and High School and graduated in 1934. He went to Western Union College in Le Mars, Iowa for two years and then transferred to the University of Iowa. He majored in Business Education and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1938. He was a pitcher for the Iowa baseball team in 1937 and 1938 and was an Iowa letterman.
He married Dorothy Gleasson on Feb. 20, 1939, in Ottumwa, Iowa. The couple moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where he was a salesman for Investors Syndicate. In 1942, they moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, where he worked for the Des Moines Register as circulation manager. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in February of 1943 and was sent to the Aleutian Islands. He then came back to the U.S., where he became a member of the 87th Mtn. Ski Troops. He served at Colorado Springs, Colo. and then at Camp Hale, Texas. He was called into the European Theater and landed in Naples, Italy, where the ski troops engaged the German Army through Italy and into Yugoslavia when the German Army surrendered. After his discharge in 1946, he and his wife returned to Remsen and then came to Sioux City in 1947.
Mr. Faber was engaged in direct sales, working for Airway Vacuum Cleaners and Electrolux. In 1959, he joined Mansfield Sandman Real Estate Co. and after his retirement, he did appraisal work for a number of small loan companies.
He was a member of the Cathedral of the Epiphany, a former member of the Boat Club and the Dakota Dunes Country Club, Iowa Lettermans Club and 10th Mountain Associates. He was a loving man who made friends wherever he went. He had a good sense of humor and always had a joke to tell. He loved animals and watching sports on TV. He was an avid golfer and loved to play bridge.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Beatrice Faber of Des Moines, Iowa; a nephew, Michael Faber of Des Moines; and a niece, Ann McDonald of Princeton, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert.
Pallbearers will be Jason Pritchard, Rodney McDonald, Matthew McDonald, Paul McDonald, Mike Faber and James Faber.
