MERRILL, Iowa -- Robert Norman Crippen, 77, of Merrill died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill, with the Rev. Dr. Klaus W. Raab officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be begin at 5 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.

Mr. Crippen was born March 12, 1924, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Walter and Ethel (Shoecraft) Crippen. He was raised and educated in Canada, and moved to the Hinton, Iowa, area in 1948.

He married Mary Blackmore on April 27, 1951, in Merrill. He was employed with various farms in the Hinton and Merrill area for many years. In 1980 the couple moved to Merrill. He was employed with ALCO in Le Mars as a custodian, retiring in 1992. He was currently employed with Plymouth Feeds in Merrill.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and served as the custodian for 25 years. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters and their husbands, Diane and Duane Zalme of Ireton, Iowa, Sandra and Rick Rise of Sioux City, Susan and Bob Lambert of Merrill, and Teresa and Jeff Ruby of Westchester, Ohio; a son and his wife, Randy and Lorrie of Le Mars; 11 grandchildren, Mark and Jennifer Zalme, Candi, Steven and Melissa Lyons, Brittany Lambert, James, Eric and Kayla Crippen and Chay and Brody Ruby; two sisters, Delores Crippen and Jean and her husband, Harvey Armstrong, all of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada; two sisters-in-law, Viola Crippen of Craig, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Thelma Hartsock of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Don Forsyth of Aylesbury, Saskatchewan, Canada; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Lawrence, Melvin, Marvin, Bobby and Ervin; and four sisters, Ethel Forsyth, Thelma Heidelberger, Maude Jennings and Beulah Detta.
