LE MARS, Iowa -- Simon De Boom, 89, of Le Mars died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery, Sibley, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Simon De Boom was born Dec. 23, 1913, near Sheldon, Iowa, in rural O'Brien County to C.T. and Jenny (Boer) De Boom. Simon received his education in a rural school near Sheldon.
Simon was united in marriage to Mary Mohr on April 3, 1940, at Melvin, Iowa. The couple farmed near Sibley for many years. Mary passed away Dec. 6, 1973. Following Mary's death, Simon continued to farm near Sibley. In 1977, he married Marie (Lubben) Dirks at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Simon and Marie retired and made their home in Le Mars.
Simon was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed gardening, walking, reading, crossword puzzles and playing cards. He enjoyed visiting his family and extended family. Simon and Marie also enjoyed many vacations together. They had traveled through 48 states on these vacations.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Marie De Boom of Le Mars; two sons, Gary and his wife, Suzanne De Boom of Ashton, Iowa, and Kermit and his wife, Pam De Boom of Sibley; a daughter, Margaret De Boom of Spirit Lake, Iowa; three grandchildren, Kristin and John, both of Ashton, and Meredith of Sibley; four stepchildren, Sharon and her husband, Loyd Rueter of Harris, Iowa, Donna and her husband, Dick Hohlfield of Holcombe, Wis., Stan and his wife, Linda Dirks of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and David and his wife, Anne Dirks of Ankeny, Iowa; 12 stepgrandchildren; 19 great-stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, Simon was preceded in death by eight brothers, Arie, Gerrit, Cornelius, Jacob, John, Tony, Henry and Frank De Boom; and three sisters, Marie Vande Kamp, Lucille Luinstra and Lyda Vande Kamp.
