LaVerne Adderine Carlson, 78, of Sioux City died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at a Sioux City nursing home following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Merrill G. Muller officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery.

LaVerne was born Dec. 7, 1924, in Hope, Ind., the daughter of Lebert and Mary (Terrell) Watterson. She moved to Sioux City as a young girl and attended Sioux City public schools.

She married Douglas H. Carlson on Jan. 25, 1941, at Dakota City. He died Feb. 5, 1994. LaVerne was food director of the lunch program for Sioux City Schools, retiring in 1977. She enjoyed working on her crafts, particularly Santa Clauses.

Survivors include three sons, Doug Jr. and his wife, Mary Ellen of Akron, Iowa, Dick and his wife, Joann of Lawton, Iowa, and Dan of Sioux City; seven daughters, Mary and her husband, Kenneth Johns, Carolyn and her husband, Kenneth Stultz, Jeanne Carlson, Kathy and her husband, Dennis Brunsting, Sandy and her husband, Leo Welch, Laurie and her husband, Mike Blanchard, all of Sioux City, and Cheri and her husband, Dennis Sander of Lugoff, S.C.; five sisters, Nella Mae Keairns, Wanetta and her husband, Charles Schultz, Roberta and her husband, Orville Thiele, all of Sioux City, Mary Ellen and her husband, Gary Irish of Sun City, Ariz., and Judy Mehess of Des Moines, Iowa; a brother, Lebert Jr. and his wife, Marlis Watterson of Sioux City; 22 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a special sister-in-law and her husband, Phyllis and Dave Hanson of Sioux City; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two granddaughters, Theresa Brunsting and Whitney Blanchard; a brother, Lee Watterson; and a sister, Dorothy Adams.
