REMSEN, Iowa – Mrs. Lawrence (Olivia) Ahlers, 98, of Remsen died Thursday, Feb. 15, 1996, at Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. John J. McGuirk officiating. Paul Ahlers will serve as lector. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen, with rosaries at 3 p.m. by the Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters of American and 3:30 p.m. by the Third Order of St. Francis. There will be a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Mrs. Ahlers was born Aug. 18, 1897, at rural Remsen, the daughter of Theodore and Frances (Lensing) Sudtelgte. She lived on a farm near Remsen for 11 years and moved into Remsen in 1909. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1914. From 1921 to 1929 she lived on her father’s farm east of Granville, keeping house for her brother, John. On Feb. 8, 1927, she married Lawrence Ahlers at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen. The couple farmed east of Granville until moving to their farm northeast of Remsen in 1929. They retired and moved into Remsen in 1956. She had been a resident of Happy Siesta Nursing Home since January 1993.
Mrs. Ahlers was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Franciscan Prayer Affiliates, Third Order of St. Frances, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. She was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Ervin and his wife, JoAnn of Remsen; three daughters, Mary Ann and her husband, Donald Garvin of Fulda, Minn., Lorraine and her husband, Mike Pohlen of Eden Prairie, Minn., and LaDonna Ahlers of Omaha; 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ben and John; four sisters, Mrs. Joe (Marie) Becker, Mrs. John (Frances) Mousel, Sister Mary Petronell, OSF, and Sister Mary Justin OSF.
Pallbearers will be Keith and Ken Ahlers, Jim and Joe Garvin and Bill and Larry Pohlen.
