AKRON, Iowa -- Donald Wayne "Bud" Lucken, 82, of Akron died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at his residence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Plymouth Presbyterian Church in rural Brunsville, Iowa, with the Rev. Randall Knuth officiating. Burial will be in Plymouth Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Hoschler Post 186 of Akron. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Mr. Lucken was born April 29, 1921, on a farm in rural Akron, the son of J. Henry and Cecelia (Woll) Lucken. He attended Akron schools and graduated in 1938.

He married Darlene Robertson on March 17, 1943, in South Sioux City. They farmed 11 miles southeast of Akron for more than 40 years. They retired in 1984 and moved into Akron.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a water tender from Dec. 12, 1943, to Dec. 4, 1945. During his service he was stationed aboard the USS Pierce APA-50 and USS Uvalde AKA-88. He completed his training at U.S. Naval Training in the Great Lakes, Camp Dahlgreen and Oil Burning School in Philadelphia, Pa. His awards and decorations include the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars, World War II Victory Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal with the Asian Clasp.

He was a member of Plymouth Presbyterian Church and a 56-year member of the American Legion, where he served as a former commander. He also was a member of the 40 and 8 Club and Farm Bureau. He served on the Akron School Board from 1959 to 1970, and served as president in 1970. He served as the Plymouth County Soil and Water Conservation district commissioner from 1953 to 1963. In his free time, he loved to play cards, work crossword puzzles, bowling and loved to watch sports of any type.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Lucken of Akron; two daughters, Fayann Ridgley of Copperas Cove, Texas, and Wendy and her husband, William Wiebold of Columbia, Mo.; a brother, Ronald "Skip" Lucken of Naples, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Lucken of Coronado, Calif., and Evelyn Lucken of Florissant, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Mark Lucken; two brothers, Frank and Robert; a sister, Lucile Fox; a sister-in-law, Evangelina Lucken; a son-in-law, Dr. Charles David Ridgley Jr.; and a brother-in-law, Ken Fox.
