LE MARS, Iowa -- Carol M. Bergin, 73, of Le Mars passed away Monday, July 25, 2005, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Presbyterian Church of Christ in Le Mars, with the Rev. Dean Goebel officiating. Family graveside services will be in Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 4 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Carol Maxine Bergin was born Nov. 29, 1931, in Remsen, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Nora (Mohning) Kohler. She graduated from Remsen Public High School. Following high school, she moved to Pasadena, Calif., where she worked as a telephone operator. She returned to the area to care for her mother, who was in poor health.

On Aug. 7, 1958, she and Edward Bergin Jr. were united in marriage in Remsen. The couple made their home in Le Mars. She was a homemaker in the early years and later worked at Sweet Sixteen Lanes bowling alley. She also worked at Wal-Mart for five years.

She was a member of Presbyterian Church of Christ, the American Legion Auxiliary and served for 25 years as the secretary for the Eagles Club Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing cards and the joy of being a grandmother. The couple traveled extensively in their retirement and she was the "navigator" that guided them on their travels. Her family will always remember the meals she prepared and even though they will try, they know they will never be able to duplicate that "something special" she put into her dishes.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Edward "Red" Bergin Jr. of Le Mars; a son and his wife, Paul and Fran Bergin of Le Mars; a son and his wife, Patrick and Peg Bergin of Knoxville, Tenn.; a daughter and her husband, Mary and Ronald Nielsen of Fairfield, Calf.; five grandchildren, Brandon, Miles and Shawn Bergin, Zachary and Tanner Nielsen; a brother and his wife, Kenneth and Connie Kohler of Remsen, Iowa; and an uncles and his wife, Stan and Blanche Mohning of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister-in-law, Kathleen Harnack.
