LE MARS, Iowa -- Harold J. Barnable, 80, of Le Mars passed away Sunday, July 24, 2005, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Le Mars, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Wasmer Post 241. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a rosary service at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Harold J. Barnable was born July 2, 1925, in Woodbury County, Iowa, to William J. and Edith Belle (Dennler) Barnable. he graduated from Union Township High School. On Feb. 15, 1946, he began serving his country in the U.S. Army. He attained the rank of Tech 4 with the ASU Medical Detachment during World War II. Following his honorable discharge on April 9, 1947, he returned to the Le Mars area. He began his career working for Bud Ross in the Ross Meat Market in Le Mars. He later worked at the John Deere Implement.
On Nov. 15, 1949, he and Sue Carol Dunn were united in marriage at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. He went to work at Albertson's in Le Mars. When Sioux Tools purchased Albertson's, he was promoted to plant manager. He retired from Sioux Tools in 1987. He then went to work for the Le Mars Flower and Greenhouse. He thoroughly enjoyed caring for the plants and landscaping. He also assisted the Johnson family at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home during his retirement years.
He was a member of St. James Catholic Church. He ushered and enjoyed helping with the annual smorgasbord. He also was a member of the American Legion Wasmer Post 241.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Sue of Le Mars; a daughter and her husband, Patricia S. and Andrew P. Brown of Baltimore, Md.; a nephew and his wife, Mike and Judy Barnable of Le Mars and their sons, Jason of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Jeff of Brookings, S.D.; a nephew, Lanny Barnable; a sister-in-law, Joyce Barnable of San Dimas, Calif.; his goddaughter, Elizabeth Orris and her mother, Melody, both of Le Mars.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Frances Barnable; two brothers, Emmet and Wayne Barnable; and a niece, Vicki Barnable.
Pallbearers will be Ken Nelson, Larry Kennedy, Jerome Dreckman, Norman Nielsen, Donald Hoss and Jerry DeWit. Honorary pallbearer will be his goddaughter, Elizabeth Orris.
