William McArthur

SIOUX CITY--William A. McArthur, 68, of Sioux City, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 1994, at Sioux City after a long illness.

He is the father of Susan Haneklaus of Westfield.

Mr. McArthur was born Oct. 7, 1925, at Sioux City, the son of Nathaniel and Edith M. (Wynans) McArthur. A lifelong resident of Sioux City, he graduated from Leeds High School in 1944 and was a member of the basketball team that participated in a state tournament. He married Marian A. Bennett on June 2, 1947, at Sioux City. He was a locomotive engineer for 40 years with the Great Northern Railroad and Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring in 1986.

Mr. McArthur was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Monahan Post 64, American Legion, Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers, Great Northern Railway Historical Society and the Akron Golf Club. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary L. McArthur of Sioux City and M/Sgt. Mark B. McArthur and his wife, Susan, of North Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters and their husbands, Susan K. and Ray Haneklaus of Westfield and Linda M. and Jeff Walding of South Sioux City; a brother, Eugene N. McArthur and his wife, Dorothy, of Sioux City; two sisters, Maxine Jackman of New Lothrop, Mich., and Eleanor Davis of Sioux City; eight grandchildren, William, Raymond, James and Steven Haneklaus, Jacob, Benjamin and Constance Walding; and Nathan William McArthur; three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith McArthur and Dorothy Nice.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church with the Rev. Lawrence McCarty officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military graveside services by Monahan Post 64, American Legion. Visitation, with the family present, will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today (Friday) with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. and Catholic Daughters of America rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
