Clara M. Meyer, 99, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Village of Le Mars (Brentwood).

Clara M. Meyer was born Nov. 15, 1907, on the family farm in Washington Township, rural Le Mars, to Dick and Flora Katherina "Tena" (Frerichs) Kruse. She was baptized at home and confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church (Preston Township) near Akron. Clara attended country school near her home where she learned crocheting, knitting and tatting. Throughout the years she would make many beautiful and useful gifts that she shared with others. Following her education she assisted her family with farming and caring for her grandmothers.

On Sept. 14, 1930, Clara and Henry Meyer were united in marriage at her parents' home. Henry's father, the Rev. Theo. Meyer, presided over the service. The couple made their home on a farm two miles west of Brunsville. They shared the work and thoroughly enjoyed crop farming as well as raising livestock.

Clara and Henry's home was always open for family and guests. Although they had no children of their own, they were always concerned about their nieces and nephews, including two nieces, Lillian Ludwigs and La Vonne Luebke, who lived with them. They retired from farming in 1978 and moved to Le Mars. While living in Le Mars they still maintained the close ties with their country roots.

Henry died on May 24, 1986. Clara remained in her home until moving to the Good Samaritan Village of Le Mars on March 26, 2002.

Clara was an active member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church (Preston Township) and participated in Ladies' Aid and WELCA. She and Henry loved to travel. Travel highlights included Washington D.C., the Eastern seaboard, Florida and the Space Needle in Seattle, Wash. She also loved vegetable and flower gardening.

Clara will be lovingly remembered by her many nieces, nephews and cousins; two sisters-in-law, Helena Meyer of Waverly, and Esther Meyer of Mesa, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Henry; an infant brother Harm and infant sister Antja; a sister and brother-in-law Meta and Henry Jelken; a brother and sister-in-law Harm and Louise Kruse, and a brother Claus Kruse and sisters-in-law Doretta and Irene.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church (Preston Township), rural Akron. Pastor Cindy Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today (Friday) at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church on Saturday prior to the funeral.
