Le Mars Daily SentinelKenneth "Bud" M. Hawkins, 84, of Maurice, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Kenneth Merritt Hawkins was born Sept. 21, 1922 on the family farm in Sherman Township, Sioux County, the son of Merritt and Eva (Buss) Hawkins. As a young child, Kenneth was given the nickname "Bud" by his grandfather. He attended school in Maurice and graduated from Maurice High School in 1940. Following high school, Bud began farming with his father.
Bud was united in marriage to Lorine Blackmore on Jan. 21, 1955, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Merrill. Bud had farmed the family farm in Sherman Township for 59 years. In 1981, Bud and Lorine moved from the farm to a home in Maurice.
Bud and Lorine enjoyed spending the winter months at there home at Mission Bell Resort, Mission, Texas. They had enjoyed 22 winters in Texas. While wintering in Texas, Bud and Lorine became involved with Children's Haven International located across the border in Mexico. He volunteered as a handyman for many years an also helped to locate and transport needed supplies across the border.
Bud was a longtime member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Reading Township, rural Ireton. Through the years he had held several offices in the church. He took great pride in caring for the church and cemetery grounds. He had also served on the Board of Directors of the Maurice Farmer's CO-OP for several years.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Lorine Hawkins of Maurice; four children, Louann Schmidt and her husband Lavern of Sioux Falls, S.D., Roy Hawkins and his wife Roxanne of Orange City, Gene Hawkins of Vermillion, S.D., and Mary Korver and her husband Kurt of Alton; 12 grandchildren, Greg and Jennifer Schmidt, Michael and Sharla Schmidt, Clay and Jennifer Schmidt, Brenna Schmidt, Ryan Hawkins, Devin and Melissa Hawkins, Thad Hawkins, Chris and Emily Hawkins, Erin and Ed Terwilliger, Kelli Hawkins, Justin Korver, and Jordan Korver; three great-grandchildren, Brady Hawkins, Dyllian Hawkins, and Addisyn Schmidt; in-laws: Laurence Blackmore of Hinton, John and Marian Blackmore of Merrill, Orville and Viola Blackmore of Merrill, Walter and Barbara Blackmore of Rochelle, Ill., Larry Blackmore of Omaha, Neb., and Mary Crippen of Merrill; a special cousin, Lloyd Buss of Paullina; and several nieces and nephews.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Merritt and Eva (Buss) Hawkins.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. today (Monday) at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. David Daumer of St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Ireton, officiating. Interment was in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with a 5 p.m. prayer service Sunday afternoon. Visitation continued Monday morning at the church from 9 a.m. until service time. Pallbearers were his grandchildren.

Pallbearers were his grandchildren.
Visitations took place on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 22, at Carlsen Funeral Home in LeMars with a 5 p.m. prayer service. Visitations continued on Monday morning at the church from 9 a.m. until the service time.
A Memorial has been established for Bud's favorite organization: Children's Haven International, 400 East Minnesota Road, Pharr, Texas 58577.
