Nonagenarian To Observe Birthday. Has Many Descendants Living in This Vicinity.
Mrs. E.A. Jahr, oldest resident in Marcus and possibly Cherokee county, will observe her 98th birthday anniversary in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Bauman, on June 28.
Ephrasene Augusta Schmidt [Renke] was born in West Prussia, Germany, in 1840. In 1863 she was married to John Jahr. To this couple were born 11 children, four of whom are living.
In 1896 the family came to America and lived on a farm in Amherst township, Cherokee county, where Mr. Jahr died in 1926. Since then Mrs. Jahr has lived with her daughters.
Besides the routine of household cuties of a woman with a large family, Mrs. Jahr did spinning, weaving and sewing. She also raised large gardens and worked in the fields when extra help was needed, both in Germany and America.
During the last years failing eyesight has curbed such activities, but the nonagenarian likes to talk about her useful years, and she enjoys listening to the reading of her German Lutheran Bible. Her hearing is good and she recognizes relatives and friends by their voices. She greets them in German usually, but she understands and speaks some English.
Mrs. Jahr has 37 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Her four living children are Mrs. Pauline Krekow, Remsen; Emil Jahr, Marcus; Mrs. Bertha Baumann, Marcus, and Mrs. Louisa Justi, Kingsley. - Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Tuesday, June 21, 1938, page 1, column 1.
