.OBITUARY OF MRS. WILLIAM SAYLES
( Irenia Albina Sargent; daughter of Alfred and Irenia BRILL Sargent / Sargeant )
.
."MRS. WILLIAM SAYLES passed away last Thursday afternoon, July 2, 1914, at her home in this city, of cancer of the stomach. She had been in declining health since the death of her husband a year ago last March, about which time she was also ill with measles, and at times had trouble with her heart. Last spring she and her daughter, Miss Hattie [Harriet Sayles], moved from the old homestead southeast of town, in Union County, South Dakota, having bought the Dr. Koch residence in this city, since which time she had been confined to her bed more or less. While the final summons came quite suddenly and as a shock to the family, the seriousness of her condition was fully realized by relatives.
Irena Albina Sargent was born at Lodi, Medina County, Ohio, October 13, 1849, and died July 2, 1914, age 64 years, 8 months and 19 days.
She grew to young womanhood in Ohio, where she was united in marriage to William Sayles on December 31, 1868 [in Medina County, Ohio]. In the spring of 1869 they located on a homestead in [Dakota Territory] Richland township, Union County, South Dakota, which remained their home for nearly forty-five years, where together they endured the privations and hardships of pioneers, but lived to enjoy the full fruitage of their early efforts and industry. There came to bless their union three daughters and two sons, who survive -- Mrs. John Huckert [Florence Sayles]; Mrs. Otis Maynard [Charlotte "Lottie" Sayles]; Miss Hattie [Harriet] Sayles; Frank and [John] Sherman Sayles, all residing in this locality. She is also survived by a sister and a brother, Mrs. Eliza Ward, of Hayward, Cal., and Harry A. Sargent, of Waterloo, Iowa. To the bereaved and sorrowing relatives the community tenders its sympathy.
Mrs. Sayles was one of God's noblewomen, helpful and charitable wherever was found deserving need, a devoted wife and mother, a kind friend and neighbor.
Funeral services were conducted in the Akron M.E. Church Sunday forenoon at 10:30 o'clock by Rev. Kuntz, Chatsworth. Quartet selections were sung by Miss Grace Willey, Mrs. L.C. Hitzemann, E. E. and Walter Mellen, and Miss Willey also sang a solo. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery, beside her husband.

Card of Thanks: “For the kindness and sympathy of neighbors and friends during the illness and after the death of our beloved mother, Mrs. Wm. Sayles, we wish to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation.”
