Miss Laux To Retire This YearMiss Bernice Laux, first grade teacher at the Franklin elementary school, has notified the Board of Education that she is retiring at the end of the current school year. She has spent 42 years of teaching in the LeMars public schools.
Miss Laux joined the faculty of the local school system in 1911 as second grade teacher in the old Clark school building. In 1915 she transferred to the Central building where she taught first grade continuously until 1939.
From 1936 to 1939 she served as principal of the Central elementary grades.
With the opening of the new Franklin building in the fall of 1939, she returned to straight classroom teaching and has taught first grade at Franklin school for the past fourteen years. Until the present year when the grade was divided, she had charge of all the first graders in the building. Sometimes there were 40 or more children in the group.
During her 42 years of service, Miss Laux has taught a total of nearly 1500 children, many of them representing the second generation. During this time, she kept up constantly, through reading, study and practice, on the newer methods of teaching.
“I’ll miss the children, but I feel I’m needed at home,” was Miss Laux’s comment in announcing her coming retirement.
Referring to Miss Laux’s service to the LeMars schools, Supt. Harvey N. Kluckhohn said, “Although she was our oldest faculty member, both in age and length of service, Miss Laux through the years has been one of our most modern teachers.”
“She was possessed of an eternal youthfulness of spirit. She has been an inspiration to hundreds of boys and girls, many of them now grown to manhood and womanhood. She will be greatly missed by the children, by their parents, and by her associates in the schools.”
