REV. JOHN JACOB ZIMMERMAN
Rev. John Jacob Zimmerman was born December 21, 1817, in Wurttemberg, Germany. There is no knowledgeable record of his parents except they were from Wurttemberg, Germany. As a child seven years of age, J. J. Zimmerman came with his parents to Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Zimmerman grew to manhood at Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Zimmerman was an Evangelical Missionary minister in Baltimore; also a tailor by trade, making some of the finest overcoats for the officers in the Civil War. John J. Zimmerman was united in marriage to Theresa Merriman in 1847, at Baltimore, Maryland. To this union six sons were born, Jacob Zimmerman, Noah Zimmerman, Frank (Shorty) Zimmerman, George Washington Zimmerman, Charles H. Zimmerman and William H. Zimmerman. All the sons were born in Baltimore, Maryland. In June 1868 Rev. Zimmerman was assigned to the frontier settlement at Melbourne, Plymouth County, Iowa. Arriving in Sioux City, Iowa, on July 19, 1868, and drove to the Phillip Schneider home where they lived until the Melbourne parsonage was completed. Rev. Zimmerman was in charge of the Evangelical church , known later as Merrill-Melbourne Evangelical Church. In less than a year, March 9, 1869, Rev. Zimmerman passed away, the result of a fatal disease growing out of a severe cold, leaving the mother with six sons, having reached the age of 51 years, 2 months and 18 days. Interment for Rev. Zimmerman is in the Merrill-Melbourne Township Cemetery.
