origin of name Palo Alto

I would like to know the origin of the name Palo Alto. It seems to be of spanish origin. Does anyone know how it came to be applied to Northern Iowa. By the way, I was born in Ira, Iowa, and Story County is chock full of my relatives. I am an engineer and scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
