“Mrs. Carrie Cope Funeral Thursday”
“Passes Away Saturday Following Long Illness: Was a Pioneer Resident”
“Mrs. Carrie M. Cope passed away last Saturday after a long illness, at the age of 83 years.

Mrs. Carrie M. Cope was born at Utters Corners, Wisconsin, November 1, 1867. With her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James R. Phoenix, and her sister Minnie, she came to Palo Alto county, Iowa October 1, 1870. She passed away at the Emmetsburg hospital Sept. 23, 1950.

Mrs. Cope is survived by a sister, Miss Minne A. Phoenix of Ruthven, and three sons, Rex C. Hubbard of North Hollywood, Calif., Roy B. Hubbard of Polsom, Montana, and Rue A Hubbard of Oakland, Calif.

Eighty-three years ago she came to Iowa with her parents and three other families, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Richards and family (the father and mother of Mrs. Phoenix), Mrs. and Mrs. George Dickerman and Rev. and Mrs. Hamilton and family. With one team of horses, one team of oxen, and one team of cows, they drove through from Whitewater, Wisconsin. The cows furnished the milk and butter for the trip. It required 28 days to cover this distance, and it rained 18 of those days. Her parents took up a homestead one mile east of the present town of Ayrshire. Their first home was a sod house. In the spring of 1881 the family moved to Ruthven.

Carrie M. Phoenix and Calvin L. Hubbard were married June 12, 1887. They lived in Ayrshire and Ruthven and later moved to Estherville where Mr. Hubbard and a brother, Mark, were engaged in blacksmithing and wagon work. Mr. Hubbard died Sept. 2, 1903. The Mrs. Hubbard and her three sons moved to Ruthven. On July 3, 1906, Mrs. Hubbard and Eugene G. Cope were married. Mr. Cope passed away Nov. 5, 1946.

Funeral services were held at the Lightle Funeral home Thursday after noon, Sept. 28, with Rev. Wm. Baddeley pastor of the Methodist church at Ayrshire, officiating. Interment was in the family plot in Crown Hill cemetery.

The eldest son, Rex C. Hubbard of North Hollywood, Calif., was the only one of the three sons unable to be present on account of illness.”
