Michael Kirby Passes Away

Last Friday Michael Kirby one of the old and highly respected citizens of the county passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John S. Martin, near Ayrshire.

Mr. Kirby was born in Limerick, Ireland, 76 years ago. In 1844 he came to America, landing at Montreal. He moved to Racine, Wisconsin, in 1848, to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1854, and to Palo Alto county in 1864. He was married in 1844 to Ellen O'Neill and seven children were born to this union, two of whom reside in this county, Thos. Kirby, of Nevada, and Mrs. Martin, of Ayrshire. For the past 11 years he has made his home with Mrs. Martin.

Mr. Kirby was a good scholar, a man of firm convictions and his honest upright character had made him many friends. The funeral was on Sunday and as the drive was made from Ayrshire to Emmetsburg, the rain storm of the forenoon prevented a large attendance. The pall bearers were all old settlers, his friends of 30 years ago, John Shea, Wm. Shea, Thos. Egan, Keerin Mulroney, Pat Mulroney, and Larry Burns.
