Mary Ellen McLaughlin was born in New York City October 11, 1862. Her age was 67. When she was a year old her parents moved to Dubuque and from there to Delhi, where she grew to young womanhood. She received her education in Visitation Academy, Dubuque. In April, 1876, she was married at Delhi to Mr. John Drummy of Manchester. Mr. and Mrs. Drummy located at Fonda where they resided for a number of years, coming to Emmetsburg in 1891 where they subsequently made their home. Thirteen sons and daughters were born to this union, five of whom are living. They are Mrs. O. W. Lans of Chicago, Mrs. W. P. McNally, Mrs. Fred McCarty and John Drummy of this city and Mrs. H. Frank Stookey of Columbia, Missouri. Mr. Drummy died March 12, 1921. Mrs. Drummy's death is also mourned by one brother, Thomas H. McLaughlin of Fonda, and by five sisters -- Mrs. Thos. Quinn of Farmington, Minnesota, Mrs. Hugh Flynn of Minneapolis, Miss Josephine McLaughlin and Miss Mary Mackin of Minneapolis and Sister Mary Antonella of Wyoming.

Among those who came from a distance to attend the funeral of the late Mrs. John Drummy were Rev. Clarence Drummy of Coggon, Mrs. Catherine McNamara and son Will of Anamosa, James McEnany(?) of Ryan, Ed Burns and son Leo of DeSmet, South Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. McLaughlin, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Murphy and family, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dakin and Charles McLaughlin, all of Fonda, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Doherty of Arnolds Park, Mrs. H. Frank Stookey and daughter Jeanne of Columbia, Missouri, Mrs. Thomas Quinn of Farmington, Minn., Mrs. Hugh Flynn, Miss Josephine McLaughlin and Miss Mary Mackin, all of Minneapolis.

Mrs. Drummy was mild of manner, kind, patient, obliging and dutiful. She looked carefully after her children when they were small and later when they were old enough to mingle with society. She gave them the best of example. She was bright, intelligent and considerate of the rights and feelings of others. She never sought social distinction, although she was recognized by all who knew her as a woman of true refinement and of sterling worth. For 42 years she took an earnest, helpful part in the community life of our city and county. The fruits of her efforts and her influence are known to our many local readers. She was a faithful member of her church and she was an humble and pious woman. The many who knew her, including the writer, will long remember her for all that she did to make Emmetsburg better and for her many deeds of sacrifice, mercy and charity. The surviving sons, four daughters, and the brother and sisters have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their sorrowing hours.
