Michael Patton is Dead.

Mr. Michael Patton, well known to so many of our readers, died at his home in this city yesterday afternoon. Mention has been made in these columns of his recent illness, from which he had partly recovered. Last Thursday he went to Epiphany, South Dakota, to consult Dr. Kroeger. he was told that his brain had been injured by a fall some time ago and that he could not recover. On his way home, he collapsed and was perfectly helpless. He never rallied and passed to his final reward last evening. The funeral will take place tomorrow at 10:30.

Mr. Patton was born at Kelogg, county of Mayo, Ireland, in 1829. He came to the United States in 1850 and settled at Carbondale, Pennsylvania. Later he moved to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, where he held the position of yard master for the C., M. & St. P. company for several years. June 4, 1868, he was married at that place to Catherine Joyce. In 1870, they moved to this county and settled on a farm in Great Oak. In 1879, they moved to this city. His wife, two sons, and four daughters survive. The sons are Matt, of Mason City, and Will, of Emmetsburg. The daughters are Mrs. W. D. Ferguson and Misses Lil, Nellie, and Josie, all of this place.

Mr. Patton was justly recognized as one of the very best citizens of Emmetsburg. He was an intelligent man, and a close, observing reader of current literature. Few men were better posted on the general affairs of his day than he was. He was thoroughly familiar with the history of his native country, as well as that of the land of his adoption, and he was as deeply touched by the afflictions of the former as he was loyally attached to the cherished institutions of the latter. He represented the best type of good citizenship. He had always the highest concern for his personal honor and he was ever ready and willing to manifest his appreciation of good in the affairs of men. He was a man of strong and enduring friendship. No one ever had reason to doubt his sincerity or the genuine warmth and worth of his manhood. The DEMOCRAT for nearly 16 years knew him as an ardent friend and it is with sincere sorrow that we chronicle his demise.
