A Pioneer Of Palo Alto Succumbed

Mrs. John McNally Died Last Thursday at Age of 82. Came to County in 1865.

Mrs. John McNally, pioneer Palo Alto county woman, mention of whose dangerous illness was published in last week's Democrat, died at 6:15 o'clock Thursday morning of the past week. Mrs. McNally's death followed rapidly failing health during the past couple of weeks. As she was 82 years of age at the time of her passing, Mrs. McNally had, of course, been failing gradually over a period of time.

The funeral was held Saturday. A requiem Mass was celebrated at 9 o'clock Saturday morning in the Assumption church with the pastor, Very Rev. W. F. Mason, officiating. There was a large attendance of old friends and relatives. Burial was in St. John's cemetery, with funeral arrangements in charge of the Foy Funeral Home. The pall bearers were Ed Kelly, Joe Kelly, W. F. Kelly, Jack Maguire, Bobby Joe McNally and Mac McNally.

Mary Ann Kelly was born at Clinton, Ill., on May 20, 1859. When she was 6 years of age her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kelly, came to Palo Alto county where they occupied a homestead one and one-half miles southwest of Emmetsburg, known as the Greer farm. As was stated in last week's Democrat, friendly Indians often visited the Kelly homestead where they were treated well and were often given food and other provisions. Mrs. McNally as a child attended school in the old town of Emmetsburg. Some time later the family moved into what is known as Emmetsburg and occupied a block in the third ward. The old town was later moved to its present site.

Mr. and Mrs. McNally were united in marriage in the Assumption church in Emmetsburg on February 18, 1878. The ceremony was performed by the late Rev. J. J. Smith. Eight sons and daughters were born to this union. Three sons and a daughter preceded their mother in death. Mr. McNally was the first city marshal, a position he held fearlessly and efficiently for many years. He was also for a number of years one of the leading auctioneers of Palo Alto county. Mr. McNally passed away August 2, 1926.

The deceased is survived by three sons and one daughter. The sons are Dan McNally of Emmetsburg; Ed. H. McNally, Estherville and Wm. McNally, St. Louis, Mo. The daughter is Mrs. H. D. Clark of San Diego, Cal. There are also four sisters who survive. They are J. T. Maguire, Fairmont, Minn.; Mrs. T. J. McGoey, Menasha, Wis.; Mrs. B. L. Maguire, Fort Dodge and Mrs. A. R. Johnson, Mason City.

Out-of-town relatives who came to Emmetsburg to be present at the last obsequies were Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Maguire, Fort Dodge; Mrs. J. T. Maguire and Mrs. A. A. Tietema, Fairmont, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Johnson, Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Cooklin, Spirit Lake; Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Kelly and Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Kelly, Whittemore; Mrs. H. E. Maguire and son Joseph of Ayrshire; Mr. and Mrs. James Thompson and sons of Curlew; Mr. and Mrs. Ben Doerning and son of Mallard; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Grethen and son of Mallard; Mr. and Mrs. E. H. McNally and sons of Estherville; Mrs. Mike Hoben and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hoben and children of Ruthven; Mr. and Mrs. Sid Higley of Waterloo; Mrs. Iva Cookingham and daughter of Ayrshire.
