Mrs. Mart Passes, Ill Many Weeks

The Funeral Held Monday. She Was a Pioneer.

After a long, lingering illness, Mrs. Michael Mart died in this city last Saturday. She was given the best of medical attention but her age and her condition were against her. The funeral was held Monday. Services were conducted at St. Thomas church, Monsignor P. F. Farrelly officiating. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. A large number of relatives and neighbors were present at the obsequies. The pall bearers were Charles Duhigg, Joseph Wollner, William Korleski, T. H. Cullen, Nicolas Martini and J. P. Jennings.

Anna Marie Erz was born in Winterich, Germany, in 1848. Her age was 75 years. She was married in her native country to Michael Mart. Mr. and Mrs. Mart came to the United States in 1881. They located at Worthington, this state. They remained in Dubuque county for six months when they moved to Palo Alto and settled on a farm in Freedom township. Mr. Mart died May 6, 1907. Mrs. Mart continued to live on the farm with her sons and daughters. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Mart. Two died in infancy. The surviving members of the family are Mrs. Alberta Keintz of Watson, Saskatchewan; John Mart of Emmetsburg; Mrs. A. Wollner of Rochester, Minnesota; Sister Anna Marie of the Sisters of St. Francis, who is at present situated at Easton, Minnesota; Mrs. Mary McNanney of Freedom township; N. W. Mart of Fairmont, Minnesota and P. J. Mart, who lives on the old home place. All were present at the funeral except Mrs. Keintz. Miss Katherine Erz, a sister of Mrs. Mart, lives in Germany. Those from a distance who came to attend the funeral were Mrs. Peter Wagner and Mrs. Peter Johnson, of Bernard, Ia., nieces of Mrs. Mart, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Quint of Worthington, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. George Kramer of Larchwood, this state.

When Mr. and Mrs. Mart came to the United States they were practically penniless. They were strangers in a foreign land but they had strong hearts and steadfast purposes. They toiled early and late, economized and, in time, became prosperous. They demonstrated well to their fellow citizens what tireless industry, perseverance and sacrifice can accomplish in a land in which all classes have equal opportunities and privileges. Mrs. Mart was a faithful, helpful wife, a dutiful, considerate mother, a kind neighbor and a true friend. Her life, her example was edifying. She loved her church, observed its precepts and profited by its instructions and admonition. The many who knew her intimately learned to honor her and will often refer with feelings of admiration and appreciation to her many admirable qualities. The affectionate, successful, worthy sons and daughters, now residents of several states, have the sincere sympathy of all in their bereavement.
