Mrs. Patrick Rogers is Dead

Was a Resident of Emmetsburg for over Thirty Years.

Mrs. Patrick Rogers of this city, who fell several weeks ago and broke one of her hips, died last Sunday morning. She was given skillful medical attention but her vitality was such that she did not gain in strength. The news of her death was quite a surprise to many who had not learned of the seriousness of her condition.

The funeral was held Tuesday. Services were conducted at St. Thomas church, Rev. M. McNerney officiating. Many old friends and neighbors were in attendance. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were M. F. Coonan, M. J. Conway, D. J. O'Brien and John J. Kane of Emmetsburg, J. S. Williams of West Bend and T. Sullivan of Graettinger.

Ann Ronan was born in the county of Tipperary, Ireland, in 1843. She came to the United States when she was quite young. She was married to Patrick Rogers at Momona, Illinois, on January 7, 1878. Mr. and Mrs. Rogers lived in that state for a number of years, after which they came to Iowa. They located in the vicinity of West Bend. Later they sold out and became residents of Osgood where Mr. Rogers was employed on the Burlington road. Something over thirty years ago they came to Emmetsburg, subsequently making their home here. About thirty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Rogers lost their three children, who died of diphtheria. The two boys were buried on the same day and the little girl a day or two later. An adopted son, John Rogers, made his home with them for many years. The loss of their children was a very severe blow to them and it did much to make their lives lonely. Mrs. Rogers is survived by her husband and their adopted son. Several relatives live near West Bend and a niece, Mrs. Harding, lives at Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Mrs. Rogers was a sincere, exemplary, devoted Christian lady. She was quiet and unassuming, but she performed conscientiously the duties of her humble station in life. Those who knew her intimately always found her a loyal friend and an obliging, generous neighbor. She was a devout member of her church and she exemplified its teachings in her daily life. She was always glad to perform any task assigned to her in order to provide for its parochial requirements. Her death is a severe blow to the aged husband, who is now nearly seventy-five years of age. Mr. Rogers was a Civil war veteran. He fought bravely and successfully the battles of his country and he overcame many perplexing difficulties in his own personal career. He has now reached a ripe old age and his loving wife, his children and his affectionate brothers and sisters are all gone. His many warm friends who knew and esteemed him and his faithful wife for nearly a third of a century have only the most profound sympathy for him in his sad bereavement.
