FUNERAL OF NICHOLAS MERKLIN (Date of Death: June 24, 1919)
The funeral of Nicholas Merklin, who passed away Tuesday of last week, was held Thursday afternoon. Services were conducted by Rev. S.O. Sande. Interment was in the cemetery north of town. The pall bearers were D. W. Cameron, Wm. Penn, J.C. Molison, C. Weigmann, Frank Briggs and Henry Lammers. Many relatives and old friends and neighbors of the deceased were in attendance at the services.
Nicholas Merklin was born in Germany in 1845. When a small boy he came to the United States, locating in Marine, Illinois. He was united in marriage at that place to Miss Elizabeth Hans. To this union seven children were born. One died in infancy and six are living. They are Mrs. Frank Berndorfner of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Joe Klingel of Sheldon; George of Bonilla, South Dakota; Ed of Sheldon; Gus of Wallingford; and Miss Louise of Sheldon. Mrs. Merklin died in 1895.
The deceased had enjoyed the best of health until about a year ago when he became afflicted with cancer of the mouth. He spent several weeks at Rochester taking the radium treatment but his condition was such that he could get but temporary relief. In April he went to Sheldon to the home of his daughter where he could receive better care and he passed away at that place as stated above.
Mr. Merklin was one of the pioneer citizens of southern Emmet County. He was an honest, industrious, hard working citizen and he was respected and richly regarded by his neighbors and friends. He took a material part in the progress and development of this section of the state and he was always prepared and willing to do his share. He leaves to mourn his death a family of respected sons and daughters, who will always honor the memory of their loving and devoted father. The Times extends sincere sympathy to the sorrowing relatives afforded him. It is the substantial, industrious, hard working citizens like Mr.Merklin who have done so much to build up the United States and to make it the powerful nation it is today. We owe them a debt of gratitude.
