Mr. Hand, son of John and Margaret Hand, was born in Allamakee county, Iowa, Jan. 1870. When a small boy he moved with his parents to a farm in Great Oak township where he lived until his marriage in Emmetsburg on Oct. 12, 1896, to Miss Mary Ann Conlon.
The couple started farming shortly after their marriage.
He retired from the farm in 1905, moving to Emmetsburg where he had a partnership in a grocery store with his brother, Pete Hand. Later he operated a store of his own on east Main Street. He retired from business in 1935 and had since then resided at his home in the south part of Emmetsburg with the exception of the past few years he spent during the winter months with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Hinman, in Minneapolis.
His wife preceded him in death. Survivors include three sons and one daughter. They are Sylvester F. Hand of Detroit, Mich., Lloyd E. Hand and Harold J. Hand of Chicago and Mrs. Hinman (Mary) of Minneapolis and a sister, Mrs. John Murray of Emmetsburg.
Mr. Hand had recently underwent surgery in University hospital at Iowa City and was enroute with Mr. and Mrs. Hinman to their home in Minneapolis where he planned to stay while recuperating from his operation. His sudden death was a shock to the members of his family. They have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their sorrow.
