T. D. Hand's Sad Death
Tuesday afternoon of last week Thomas Hand, of Great Oak township, met with a mishap resulting in his death, which occurred Saturday night. He had been assisting Tom Miller to thresh and, in moving from one setting to another, was driving a truck wagon loaded with horse power sweeps and threshing machine tools. The horses were going pretty fast when one of the wheels went into a rut, throwing him off the trucks. The fall injured his spine. When picked up he was unable to move his body from the shoulders down. He lingered until Saturday night when he passed away. He was perfectly conscious until the last. The funeral was held Monday forenoon. It was one of the largest ever witnessed in this section. There were from 115 to 120 teams in the procession. The services were conducted at Assumption church by Father Carroll, of Ayrshire, the deceased having been a member of the Ayrshire parish. The pall bearers were the five brothers of the deceased and their cousin, John Hand. The interment was in St. John's cemetery.
Thos. D. Hand was born in the state of New York, July 9, 1854. Soon after his parents moved to Allamakee county, where they lived several years. In October 1872, they came to this county and settled in Great Oak. Here Thomas attained his years of maturity. In February, 1882, he married to Elizabeth Jennings. The surviving family consists of Mrs. Hand, four boys, and one girl. The oldest is 16 and the youngest is five.
Mr. Hand was a frugal, industrious, manly fellow. He was frank and sincere and hated deception and double dealing. He was blunt and outspoken, and those who associated with him always knew where to find him. He was a man of good habits and was distinctly a lover of home. He looked carefully after his domestic affairs and was contented and prosperous. His sad death, at a time when his help and counsel were most needed, is deplorable indeed, and the sympathy of all is extended to his family and other relatives.
