John W. Hickey, Pioneer, Dead
Was 80 Years of Age. Funeral to be Held this MorningJohn W. Hickey, 80, Palo Alto county pioneer resident, passed away at his farm home north of this city at 8:40 o’clock Monday evening as the result of advanced age and complications. He was ill only a short time.
Funeral services will be held this Friday morning at St. Thomas Catholic church in this city, with the pastor, Rev. M. McNerney, officiating. pallbearers, grandsons of the deceased, are Joe McEwan, Francis, Robert and Fred Beschorner, Leo Hickey and Matthew O’Dell. Interment will be in St. John’s Catholic cemetery south of this city. The Foy Funeral home of Emmetsburg is in charge of funeral arrangements.
John W. Hickey, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Hickey, was born in Great Oak Township on April 6, 1860. He spent his youth in this vicinity and attended our local schools. On February 7, 1887, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Conway of Osgood. The ceremony was performed in the Assumption Catholic church in Emmetsburg, the pastor, the late Rev. J.J. Smith, officiating. Mr. Hickey farmed in Palo Alto County all his life. His father, the late James Hickey, was the first judge in Palo Alto county. Mr. Hickey is survived by six sons and daughters. They are Mrs. Fred Beschorner, Mrs. Bridget O’Dell, Lawrence Hickey and Charles Hickey, all of Emmetsburg, Michael Hickey, of Osgood, and Mrs Peter Toole of Waupeton, Iowa. Five brothers and sisters also mourn his passing. They are Dan Hickey, Mrs. L.E. Conway, Al Hickey, Thos. Hickey, and Mrs. H.E. Ferguson, all of whom reside in Palo Alto county. Twenty-two grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren also survive.
