RUTHVEN, IOWA CENTENNIAL 1884-1984 p. 240

FLEMING FAMILY.
Submitted by Marian Brennan Moses

Our grandfather, Mike Fleming came from Tuam, Mayo County, Ireland at the age of 19 years during a potato famine in 1868. Along with him came a sister, Mary Fleming Foley and a brother John. They came to Iowa and settled at Moingona, Boone County for three years and later moved to a farm near Ruthven. The farm was homesteaded in 1877 and is now owned by Mrs. Leonard Currans. John, Mike's brother, homesteaded the farm now owned by Bob Williamson.

Our grandfather, Mike, worked in the coal mines near Coalville, Iowa and married Elizabeth Gleason from Fort Dodge. They later moved to the farm he homesteaded. They had six children: Mary Brennan, Joe, Lizzie Higgins, Francis, Anne and Loretta Steils, who resides in Reno, Nevada. All are deceased except Loretta.

Later in 1915, grandfather gave up farming and was Palo Alto County Supervisor for three terms, moving to Ruthven in 1915 and later to Emmetsburg in 1916.

[Note: Tuam is in Co. Galway, Ireland so it is unknown if this is correct.]
