Joseph “Isaac” Stewart Family

Joseph “Isaac” Stewart was born at Waterloo, Ontario on June 27, 1839 to Charles and Catherine (Burkin) Stewart. Charles was born in Ohio but we don’t know the reason why he moved to Canada. His wife was born in Germany.

In 1863, in Waterloo, Ontario Isaac married Catherine Brennan. Catherine Brennan was the daughter of James and Catherine (Welsh) Brennan, born May 6, 1844. Her father, James Brennan died in Emmetsburg in June of 1866 at the age of 89, so must have been born around 1707, in the county of Roscommon, Ireland. Her mother, Katherine or Catherine Welsh was born in Kilkenny, Ireland on November 2, 1807 and when very young crossed the ocean with her parents and located in Canada. At the age of 18, Catherine Welsh married James Brennan. Mrs. Brennan died at the age of 97 in 1904 in Emmetsburg. Fifteen children were born to this union, and ten came here in July of 1865 to settle in the area.

Isaac Stewart and wife Catherine, daughter of the James Brennans also moved and settled on a farm west of Graettinger in 1865. In 1882 they moved to town, where according to his obituary, he opened a meat market. He also purchased livestock for several years. Around 1902 he became ill and was taken to the Independence Hospital. He never fully recovered and died on January 29, 1904.

Isaac and Catherine had eight sons and three daughters.

Isaac’s obituary stated:

Mr. Stewart was for many years one of the rugged, hearty, industrious men of this county. He was frank and outspoken, but it did not take much to bring out the kindness and warmth of his nature, and he had a big heart and a generous soul. He was honest and well meaning and, while not a perfect man, he was good citizen and a pleasant, well disposed, loyal friend and neighbor.
