Red Oak Express, Friday, July 13, 1917, Red Oak, Iowa, Page 9.

Samuel Donaldson Gillespie of West township died Monday afternoon, July 9, at the Chas Coates home three miles north of Essex, his death being due to blood poisoning which resulted from a scratch on the finger. He had been to consult a physician and was on his way home when trouble with his car necessitated his staying over night at the Coates home. He grew rapidly worse while there until death relieved him of his suffering.

Mr. Gillespie was born March 3, 1861 in Carroll county, Ill., and was married to Miss Maggie Gillespie on October 10, 1889, at Red Oak. To this union four children were born, two dying in infancy. Those living are Vernard and Frank, both of West township. He leaves, besides his widow and children, also five brothers, three sisters and four grandchildren.

He was a resident of West township for seven years, and was a member of Salem United Evangelical church, serving also as a member of the board of trustees. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home at 2 o'clock and at the church at 2:30. The pallbearers were Simon Rost, W.E. Gillmore, Geo. Bishop, M.P. Giles, W.C. Nelson and Conrad Goranson, and burial was in the Red Oak cemetery. Those who were present from a distance to attend the funeral were Miss Emma Gillespie and Mr. and Mrs. Harry McIntyre of Omaha, Miss Mattie Gillespie of Northboro, Mrs. Lila Boon of Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes and Mr. and Mrs. Peas of Shenandoah.

The many friends of the bereaved family extend deepest sympathy to them in sorrow.
