Thomas Murphy Dies Following Short Illness

Thomas Murphy, a resident of this community for nearly sixty years, passed away Saturday, Jan. 3, at the Hand hospital in Shenandoah. For twelve years Mr. Murphy was afflicted with a heart leakage, but had been especially well until Christmas Day. On the following Saturday he was taken with a severe pain in his right side and that evening he was taken to the Hand hospital and a specialist summoned from Omaha. The specialist advised treatment which relieved his suffering but he gradually became weaker until the end came at about three o'clock in the afternoon Saturday, Jan. 3.

Funeral services were held at the home west of Coin at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, with Rev. V. W. Henderson in charge. Interment was in Elmwood cemetery.

Thomas Murphy, oldest son of John and Elizabeth Murphy, was born at Woodhull, Ill., April 9, 1865. At the age of six years, he came to Iowa, with his parents, to the farm which has since been his home.

Tom, as he was more familiarly known, was preceded in death by his father and mother, two sisters, Gertrude and Nellie, and one brother Jim, the latter having died just four weeks ago.

Tom will be greatly missed by all, especially by his sister Jennie, who share the old home with him and has been unusually faithful in her companionship and care of this loved brother. Besides Jennie he leaves another sister, Lillian Schimana, and four brothers, Fred, John, Bert and Will, all of Coin. Also a great many nephew sand nieces to whom "Uncle Tom" has meant so much.

Mr. Murphy's familiar figure will be greatly missed for he was loyal to the family and kind and sympathetic to his friends and neighbors. He became a member of the M.E. church at Coin early in life, always remaining faithful to the church of his choice.

We take this means of thanking our friends and neighbors for their sympathy and many acts of kindness during the illness and following the death of our brother. Billie Rowan and wife of Clarinda were down in Coin Monday and attended the Thomas Murphy funeral.

Mr. and Mrs. Bert Murphy motored to Lincoln, Nebr., Tuesday taking their daughter, Edna, back to her work at the University of Nebraska, after spending her holiday vacation here with home folks. Edna planned to returned with Miss Ruth Gamble and Warren Henderson Monday, but on account of the death of her uncle, remained until Tuesday.
