John Graves, the son of John Henry and Amy (Jacobs) Graves was born near Melvin, Iowa on October 8, 1908. He spent his youth in the Ocheyedan area and graduated from Ocheyedan High School in 1926.
On July 11, 1931 he was united in marriage to G. Myrle McDonough of Jackson, Minn. at Watertown, S.D. Following their marriage they moved to a farm near Melvin in 1932 and resided there until their retirement in 1965. At this time they moved into Melvin. In April of 1985 they moved to Ocheyedan. John passed away on May 25, 1985 at the Osceola Community Hospital at Sibley, Iowa at the age of 76 years, seven months and 17 days.
He is survived by his wife of Ocheyedan, children, Leola Rozema of Ocheyedan, Max Graves of Mesa, Ariz., David Graves of Everly, and Margie Scranton of Dubuque, Ia., 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Maymie Strayer of Bakersfield, Calif. and Pearl Kout of Ocheyedan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.
Funeral services were held May 27 at the United Methodist Church in Melvin with Rev. Leon Wallace officiating.
Casketbearers were Mike Rozema, Larry Rozema, Alec Scranton, Blake Scranton, John W. Graves and Roger Elder. Honorary bearers were Tim Bremer, Kevin Kyle, Peter Wyatt, John Bandy, Tom McDougall and Bob Hatch.
The congregation sang the hymns "Just As I Am" and "Abide With Me" with Mrs. Mary Benz as organist.
Interment was in BakerTownship Cemetery, Melvin, with the Sanborn Funeral Home in charge.
