January 16, 2013Loren D. Janssen, age 91 of Sibley, IA died Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, WI.
Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Friday, January 25th at First Presbyterian Church in Sibley, IA, with Rev. Terry Simm officiating.
Burial will follow at St. Andrews Cemetery in Sibley.
Loren Dale Janssen was born March 19, 1921 in Sibley, IA to Harry and Tena (Bruns) Janssen. He was raised in the Sibley area and attended Country School through the 8th grade. He grew up working on the family farm as well as being hired on other farms.
Loren served in the United States Navy (1942- 1945) and was on several ships home ported out of Brooklyn, NY. He served aboard ship as a Boatswains Mate 2nd class. He saw service in the Asiatic Pacific, European, African and Middle Eastern theatres of war.
On October 20, 1946 he was united in marriage to Cecelia Kennedy at St. Ansels Catholic Church in Brooklyn, NY. For two years the couple made their home in Brooklyn before moving to Sibley.
Loren, a hard worker, had a variety of jobs before he and his wife started their own businesses in the early 1950s. They operated Janssen Salvage and Janssen Tree Service for over 50 years.
Loren loved the outdoors. His wife and children shared that enjoyment as they would go camping, boating, fishing and traveling together. After their children were grown, Loren and Cecelia continued their adventures, traveling the United States, visiting friends and family.
After Cecelia passed away, Loren continued to travel. While at home, he enjoyed family gatherings, watching old western movies and friends stopping by for coffee.
He was also a member of the American Legion.
Loren had a great appreciation for nature. He especially loved animals and watching wildlife in their habitat. He could often be seen driving around in his golf cart with his canine friend seated right beside him. Loren was always ready to help, whether it was family, friend or stranger. He will be greatly missed. Blessed be his memory.
Loren is survived by his children, George Janssen of Colfax, CA, Gerard Janssen of Sibley, IA, John (Val) Janssen of Sibley, IA, Lorraine Kaiser of Spencer, IA, Steve (Katie) Janssen of Antelope, CA, Maureen Janssen of Hazleton, IA and Barb Janssen of La Crosse, WI; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Duane Janssen of Sheldon, IA and Dean Janssen of Sibley, IA; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Janssen of Dubois, IN; and many other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of almost 49 years, Cecelia Janssen; brothers, Donald and Glen; sister, Audrey Christians; sisters-in-law, June, Jane and Hermina; granddaughter, Angela Janssen; and son-in-law, Rick Kaiser.
