David James Niswander was born on April 26, 1935, in Ocheyedan, Iowa. He was the son of Ralph Eugene and Helen Robin (Case) Niswander. He lived his youth and attended school in Ocheyedan.

He was united in marriage to Kathryn Wise of Eagle Grove, Iowa, on October 2, 1954, in Topeka, Kansas. They lived in Ocheyedan, where David worked construction as a project superintendent with elevator construction for Jarvis Construction, Jacobson and Sons Construction, and Vigen Construction.

He drove truck for many years for Midwest Coast Trucking in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and most recently leased and drove truck for Bruscher Trucking in Sioux Falls.

In 1996, David suffered from many strokes, which left him disabled and unable to work.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ocheyedan.

He was a founding member of the Ocheyedan Catfish Club.

David enjoyed fishing for catfish, playing cribbage and pinochle, reading, golfing, and cooking. He was a storyteller and always had a joke. He enjoyed being with his family and spending time with his grandchildren. David and Kathy enjoyed traveling to Arizona to visit family.

David passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2007, at the Sibley Nursing and Rehab in Sibley, where he had lived for two months.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife: Kathy Niswander of Ocheyedan, IA; seven children and ten grandchildren: Steven and Barb Niswander of Ocheyedan, IA, and children: Levi of Monroe, NC, Nicole of Rochester, MN, and Dylan of Ocheyedan, IA; Dean Niswander of Ocheyedan, IA; Diane and Chuck Benz of Melvin, IA, and children: Jesse of Crooks, SD, Jaron of Algona, IA, Jordan of Melvin, IA; Brenda Drenkow of Ocheyedan, IA, and children: CPL Chris Hattendorf and wife L/CPL Nichole Roost of Oceanside, CA, Austen Drenkow of Ocheyedan, IA; Robin and Michael McDaniel of Yorkville, IL, and child: Cameron Vos of Yorkville, IL; Lorrain Bremer of Sioux City, IA, and special friend Craig Wahman of Sioux Falls, SD; Neil Niswander of Milford, IA, and child: Emma of Lake Park, IA; two sisters: Velna Feltz of Woodward, IA, Judy and Al Dau of Melvin, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: William "Bill", Robert "Red", Charles "Chuck", Keith, Richard "Dede"; grandson: Lucas James Hattendorf.
