SERVICES: Tuesday, October 29, 2002, at 10:30 AM at Christian Reformed Church in Sibley, Iowa.
INTERMENT: Holman Township Cemetery, Sibley, Iowa

Laurence Van Der Plas, son of Adrian and Marie (Pakkebier) Van Der Plas, was born on January 18, 1920, in Adams, Nebraska. He lived his youth in Phillipsburg, Prairie View, and Long Island, Kansas. He attended school in Kansas, where he graduated from the eight grade. Laurence served in the U.S. Army, overseas during World War II, from October of 1942 to November of 1956, when he was honorably discharged. He moved to Sibley, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Clara Bergsma of Sibley, Iowa, on August 8, 1946, at the Christian Reformed Church Parsonage in Sibley. They lived in Prairie View and Long Island, Kansas, where Laurence worked on a farm, at a lumberyard, and as a janitor. They moved to Orange City, Iowa, in 1954 where Laurence worked as a carpenter for 35 years. He retired in 1982. In 1989, they moved to Sibley. Laurence was a former member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, where he served as a Cadet Counselor for 15 years. He was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Sibley. He assisted in being in charge of the Fare Share Program in Sibley. He helped with C.R.W.R.C. Disaster Relief across the country. He also volunteered at the nursing homes. He was always ready to help people. Laurence also enjoyed knitting on a knitting machine, fixing puzzles and going fishing. He passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2002, at the Country View Manor in Sibley, Iowa, at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 6 days.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife Clara, two honorary children: Conrad and Debbie Schiebout of New Hampshire and honorary grandchildren: Angela of Beaverton,
Oregon and Ryan Schiebout of New Hampshire; one brother and sister-in-law: Ernest and Gertrude Van Der Plas of Jenison, MI; three sisters-in-law: Martha Goslinga of Orange City, IA, Esther Van Der Plas of LeMars, IA, Sylvia Van Der Plas of lreton, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers: Gerald, Tenus, Carl, Elmer, Raymond, Alfred; two sisters: Christine Halderman and Julia Watkins.
