Avis Mary (Beckman) Dvorak was born in Melvin, IA, on May 13, 1929, to Clarence O. and Emma K. (Bornholdt) Beckman. She was raised with her four brothers, and attended the Melvin schools, graduating in 1947. During her senior year of high school, Avis played in the Iowa State High School Girls’ Basketball Tournament. She attended secretarial school in Omaha, NE, and Kansas City, MO before taking a position as a teletype operator for American Airlines in Chicago, IL.
She was united in marriage to Richard Dvorak on September 2, 1951. They were blessed with six children. In addition to raising her family, Avis worked with her husband in the farm implement business for 32 years. She was a Cub Scout and 4-H leader while her children were involved in those activities. She also spent seven years microfilming records at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, IA. She was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary—having held all offices at both the local and county levels. She was an active participant in numerous church meetings including Circles, choir and Bible Studies. She was a board member of the Western Iowa Synod Women’s Organization. She attended the American Lutheran Church of Melvin as well as the Faith Lutheran Church of Sibley.
Following a brief illness, Avis passed away at the Sibley Nursing and Rehab Center on Thursday, October 4, 2012, having reached the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Clay, Rex, and Gene.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 61 years, Richard; her children: Laine (Marjorie), David (Margo), Keith, Linda, Tami (Roger Ackerman), Jan (Steve Carroll); 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; her brother, Alan (Billie) Beckman; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Avis’s goals in life were to serve family, church and country. Her life was a clear demonstration of this.
