DIED: October 2, 2012

Brian H. Jobes, 63, of Grinnell, died on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 6, 2012, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Deacon William Olson officiating. Pallbearers are Scott Apland, Tony Apland, Jarl Walters, Bryan Gill, Mehmed Huskanovic and Bob Stewart. Interment will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.
Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday at St. Mary's Religious Education Center, 1013 Broad Street in Grinnell. The family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening. A rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Religious Education Center.
Memorials may be designated to the Brian H. Jobes Memorial Fund to benefit organizations of the family's choice. Memorials may be mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with his family at www.smithfh.com.
Brian was born the son of Glenn H. Jobes and Anita (Kruger) Jobes on March 16, 1949, in Sibley, Iowa. He was raised in Melvin, Iowa and he graduated from the Melvin Community High School with the class of 1967. He received his BA and Masters degrees in Industrial Technology/Secondary Education from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri. Brian's first teaching job was with the Topeka, Kansas Public School system in the Industrial Arts department.
Brian was united in marriage to Rosemary K. O'Dowd on June 2, 1973, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Corning, Iowa. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Grinnell and Brian taught Industrial Arts in the Middle School and High School for nine years. He has worked for the U.S. Postal Service since 1989 and for many years at the Grinnell Post Office.

Brian and Rosemary were blessed with two children, Jennifer and Jeremy. Brian's family was his life. He was actively involved with his children's activities and he coached Jeremy's 5th and 6th grade baseball team and spent countless hours playing catch and practicing hitting with Jennifer. He dearly loved his grandchildren and looked forward to visiting them.
Brian was active in the Poweshiek County Democratic party. He was a member of the Grinnell chapter of the Socrates Café. Other enjoyments included fishing, gardening, spending time with his family, and completing home projects. Brian will be remembered for his honesty, love for his family, dedication to his job, being a handyman who could fix almost anything, and for the courage that he showed during the last few months while battling cancer.

Brian is survived by his wife of 39 years, Rosemary Jobes of Grinnell; his children, Jennifer (Bryan) Gill of Grimes, IA and Jeremy (Aimee) Jobes of Ankeny, IA; 4 grandchildren, Alexa, Carson, Cade and Jackson Gill of Grimes; 2 sisters, Mary Jobes of San Antonio, TX and Kate Apland of Melvin, IA; a brother, John Jobes of Melvin; sister-in-law, Ann (Bob Nelson) O'Dowd of Omaha, NE; and nephews, Scott and Tony Apland .
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Gilbert O'Dowd, mother-in-law, Millie O'Dowd Hughes, step-father-in-law, George Hughes; and niece Kelsey Jobes.
