Joyce Shattuck, age 82, of Nashville, TN (formerly of May City, IA) died peacefully, Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Alive Hospice Care, St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 28, 2011 at the First Reformed Church in Melvin, IA with Pastor Al Honken officiating. Burial will follow in the Harrison Township Cemetery, rural May City, IA.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 27th from 2-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley.

Joyce Jean Shattuck was born on June 4, 1929 at home in O’Brien County Iowa, the eldest child of Isaac and Eva (Koster) Poldervaard. She lived most of her life in northwest Iowa. Her childhood and school years were spent in the Sheldon area until her family moved to May City in 1948. She was proud to call May City her home, even after she moved to Nashville to be with family in 2008. Joyce was united in marriage to Charles W. “Bill” Shattuck on the 21st day of March 1950. Joyce was a tireless worker, as a mom, housewife and member of the church. Her domestic talents will always be remembered by all of her family and friends. During her lifetime she worked as a nurse’s aide, grocery store clerk, fry cook and for over a decade at Berkley and Company in Spirit Lake, IA. In 1980, Joyce realized a longtime desire when she and Bill purchased the May City store, where she also acted as Postmaster, and as always the “Avon Lady.” In 1992, she sold the store. She stayed active with her many hobbies, and of course her granddaughter Shannon’s musical career. She was a sixty year member of the First Reformed Church in Melvin; singing in the choir, serving on committees, Ladies Guild Auxiliary and a term as an Elder. Joyce was always active in the church and making many visits weekly to bring cheer to friends and others in nursing homes in the area. She was a co-founder of the Duo Decem Club in May City, and loved singing in “The Musicale”. Her favorite pastimes included early morning walks, flowers, music, bowling and most importantly her family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are three daughters, Sandra (Kevin) Haeberle of Long Beach, CA, Suzi (Tom) Brown of Nashville, TN and Sheri Patrick of Nashville, TN; three grandchildren, Shannon (Shaun) Silva, Wendy (Jim) Schauer and T.J. (Sarah) Brown; eight great-grandchildren, Tanner and Triston Silva, Eddie, Brittany and Summer Schauer and Mitchell, Sam and Annie Brown; four sisters, Leona, Arlene, Marcella and Joanie; and one brother, Loren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Bill.
