William “Bill” Ernst Leonard Daum, the son of George and Minnie (Koehlmoos) Daum, was born May 30, 1917 on a farm near Pilger, Nebraska. He received his education at Stanton, Nebraska country school No. 18. He resided near Pilger and later Altona, Nebraska until he was called into the Army during World War II. He served from May of 1942 and was discharged in October of 1946 as a P.F.C.
On November 2, 1943, he was united in marriage to Marie Otte at her parent’s home in Sutherland, Iowa. While Bill was in the services, Marie resided in Sutherland and upon Bill’s return the couple made their home in Sutherland. In 1951, the couple moved to Calumet, where they lived for over 50 years until moving to the Sutherland Care Center in August of 2005. Bill was employed first as a farm hand for Donnie Segelke and Harry Schultz; he later worked as a carpenter for Oscar Vogt and a feed deliverer for Quaker Oats and retired in 1971, working as a feed deliverer for Riebesell Feed Store.
Bill passed away at the Sutherland Care Center on Saturday, November 4, 2006 reaching the age of 89 years, 5 months and 4 days.
He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland, a 50 year member of the Sutherland American Legion and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. While in Calumet, he was a 54 year member of the Calumet Fire Department, a member of the Town and Country Saddle Club and the Commercial Club.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Marie Daum of Sutherland; two daughters, Marjo Daum of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Marlene and her husband, Galen Vander Pol of Sutherland, Iowa; three grandchildren, Darcy and her husband, Monte Dreckman of Marcus, Iowa; Daneé and her husband, Doug Snyder of Lake City, Iowa and Tracy Vander Pol of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; six great-grandchildren, Cody, Alexandra and Hannah Dreckman; Brett and Harley Snyder and Tyler Vander Pol; also other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Otto, Edwin, George and Elmer; four sisters, Amanda Sedlock, Hildegard Dryer, Amelia Grashorn and Sophia Tesch.
