Oscar Otto Friedrich Mews 1916-2005

Oscar Otto Friedrich Mews, the son of Herman and Ricka (Engfer) Mews, was born March 28, 1916 in Bridgewater, South Dakota. After the death of his father in 1917, his mother moved the family to a farm near Calumet, Iowa.

Oscar received his education in the Calumet area and graduated from Calumet High School in 1934. He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Ivan, Arkansas from April 1935 to July of 1935 and in Eldora, Iowa from July 1935 until October of 1935. He returned to the Calumet area to be a farm hand.

He served during World War II from 1942 until his discharge in 1945. Oscar was in the Army in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and in Central Europe. After his discharge, he returned to the Calumet area.

In April of 1954, he was united in marriage to Delores Runge. He worked for many years in the Calumet area as a farm hand until his retirement. He had made his home at the Sutherland Care Center for the last several years. He passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2005 at the Baum-Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar, reaching the age of 89 years, 5 months and 17 days.

He was baptized on June 22, 1916 and later confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina, Iowa on December 28, 1930. He enjoyed fishing, living on the farm and mechanic work.

Oscar is survived by four sons, [redacted]; three grandchildren, [redacted]; two sisters, Gertrude Doling of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Loretta Koester of Pella, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Carl.
