Services in memory of Lloyd C. Newkirk were conducted at 2 pm Saturday, April 29, 2006, at Trinity United church of Christ in Hartley, Iowa. Reve. Jeff Filkins officiated. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery of Hartley. Hartley and Sanborn Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Lloyd Clarence Newkirk was born December 11, 1929 to Clarence and Rose (Bock) Newkirk near Ocheyedan, Iowa. His early school years were spent attending country school near May City; he graduated from Hartley High School. Lloyd enlisted in the United States Army on December 7, 1948, and served until November 3, 1952. While serving in the army, Lloyd belonged to Company C, 30th Infantry out of Fort Benning, Georgia. While serving his country he received the Korean Service Medal, Army Occupational Medal(Japan), and a Purple Heart.
On March 15, 1953, Lloyd married Ruthe Elaine Kroger at the Trinity Evangelical and Reformed church in Hartley. Following their marriage, Lloyd worked for Bloemendaal's Hatchery and Jacobson's Hatchery, where among his many duties, he was a "chicken doctor," which is posting chickens to diagnose why they were sick. He then went to work for the City of Hartley as a lineman, and later worked as the City Water Department Supervisor until retiring after 27 years of service. Lloyd and Ruth lived on their acreage south of Hartly for 45 years together, raising three children and thousands of chickens.
Due to ill health, Lloyd entered the Community Memorial Health Center on August 22, 2005, and passed away there on Thursdya, April 27, 2006, at the age of 76 years, four months and 1 days, after battling ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
Left to cherish his memory are: his wife, Ruth, of 53 years; a daughter, LaDonna "Lynn" and her husband, Mark, of Spencer, Iowa; two sons, Lloyd Lon and Loren of Hartley; four grandchildren [redacted]two sisters, Joyce Lyman and her husband Duane of Melvin, Iowa, and Cleone Ellingson and her husband, Ray of May City, Iowa; a sister in law, Leona Newkirk of Worthington, Minnesota; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Dean Newkirk; and a step-mother, Dorothy Newkirk.
Lloyd was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, serving on numerous committees, was a Cub Scout, Webelo, and Boy Scout Pack Leader, Car Nut club, and a member of the Arthur W. Kirchoff Legion Post 288 of Hartley.
His favorite pastime was working on, driving, and giving rides in his 1930 Model A car. Lloyd had the honor of having many "Kings and Queens" and "Princes and Princesses" ride in the rumble seat in area parades over the years. He also won many awards and trophies in car shows with his Model A. Showing vintage tractors and plows with his sons was always a pleasure for Lloyd. He very much enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
