Jacob Meehlhause (1866-1955)

Jacob Meehlhause, the son of John and Marie Meehlhause, was born September 29, 1866, in Hessen, Darmstadt, Germany. He died on Tuesday, November 29, 1955, at the age of 89 years and 2 months.

In infancy, he was consecrated to God in baptism and later confirmed into the church. When he was two years old, he came to this country with his parents and settled at Ashton, Illinois. In later years they moved to Dysart, Iowa, and from there he came to Hartley in the spring of 1892.

On September 11, 1892, he was united in marriage to Kathrine Fink, and they settled on a farm near Hartley. In 1928, they retired from farming and moved to Hartley.

Ten children were born to this union. His wife and two daughters, Anna and Freda, and one son, William, preceded him in death.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Martha Fredericks, Mrs. Lena Frick, and Mrs. Rosa Gonnerman, all of Hartley; and four sons, John of Denver, Colorado, Edward of Hartley, Louis of Rockwell, Iowa, and Lawrence of San Bruno, California; two sons-in-law and four daughters-in-law; twenty grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; three brothers, John, Rudolph, and Henry of Hartley; and one sister of Chicago, Illinois and many other relatives.

He was a member of Trinity Evangelical and Reformed church and of the Churchment's Brotherhood.

Funeral services were held at the church on Friday, December 2, with Rev. Maschmeier in charge. The Foley Funeral Home served as mortician.
