Ronald Houghtaling
1916-1995

Ronald Houghtaling, the son of Donald and Myrtle Fay (Woody) Houghtaling, was born at Gillet Grove, Iowa on October 26, 1916. He lived his youth in the Gillett Grove and Webb areas and graduated from high school at Webb. He continued his education by attending college in Joplin, Missouri.

He was united in marriage to Geneva Walter of Peterson, Iowa on July 23, 1941, at Storm Lake, Iowa.

He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945.

He was employed with the Standard Oil Company from 1947 to 1964. He began his employment with the State of Iowa in 1964 and retired from that work in 1978. Ron and Geneva moved to Melvin in October, 1979. Ron died there at his home on October 27, 1995, at the age of 79 years, one day.

He is survived by his wife, Geneva, of Melvin; his daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Bill Luke of Cincinnati, Ohio; one grandson, Lance Luke of Duck Town, Tennessee; one granddaughter; three great grandchildren; and one sister, Vivian Isabelle of Joplin, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Derek, and one sister.

Ron was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sanborn where he had served on the Session and Trustees. He was a member of the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge. During his lifetime, he also served on various school boards and city councils. Two of his favorite pastimes were hunting and being a ham radio operator.

Funeral services were held October 30 at the First Presbyterian Church in Sanborn with Rev. William Haak officiating. Military graveside services were conducted by Earl T. Conaway Post No. 318, American Legion, Sanborn. Burial was in Roseland cemetery, Sanborn. Sanborn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
