Paul Lago 1845-1915

Passing of Another Pioneer

Mr. Paul Lago was born near Montreal, Canada , Aug. 16 1845 and passed away at his home east of town November 24, 1915. At the age of five years he moved with his parents to Hermon Co., N.Y. When twenty years old he came west first to Tipton, Ia. and later to O'Brien Co., where he homesteaded in 1872.

He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Butterfield Feb. 14, 1880. To this union were added seven children, Lydia, Charles, Arthur, Rosette, Emma, Lena and Leon. Emma having died in childhood and Lydia in June 1910. Mr. Lago was one of six children a brother and 2 sisters preceeded him to the better land.

Among those left to mourn are his wife and family all of whom were present during his last sickness and death and besides there are three sister, Mrs. Benj. Woods of Richville, N.Y., Mrs. James Woods of Bigelow, N.Y., and Mrs. Ida Barney of New London, Ia.

Services were held at the Gaza Congregational church of which he was a charter member. He hauled the first load of rock for the foundation when the church was erected.

He was a kind husband and father and will be sadly missed in the home also by many friends and neighbors, wo loved and respected him for so many years.

The pastor spoke appreciative words regarding his Christian life and urged the mourners to live hear to God and prepare for the great reunion beyond the grave. Interment took place at the Highland Cemetery November 26, 1915.

Those from away were Chaucery Woods of Pukwana, S.D., Mr. Grant Butterfield of Mitchell, S.D. Grant Coffee and wife of Ocheyedan, Mrs. Gaskill and Guy Gaskill of Sioux City and Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Roberts of Sheldon.
