Sarah Elizabeth Butterfield was born July 4, 1850 in Ogle county, Illinois. When seven years of age she, with her parents, moved to Iowa, settling in Poweshiek county. Sometime later the family moved to O'Brien county, settling in Baker township. After completing her education she taught school three years.

On February 14, 1881, she was united in marriage to Paul Lago. They settled on a farm near Gaza, where they spent the remainder of their lives, her husband preceded her in death, November 28. 1915. Two daughters, Emma and Lydia, have also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Lago was the eldest of nine children, of which only two survive to mourn her death. As one of the pioneers of the Northwest, she passed through many and varied experiences of the early settlers, and while busy with her own duties and the raising of her family, she always found time to go to others in the time of need and many a young mother has felt more courageous, and brave with her near during the early days when nurses and doctors were few and hard to get.

She was a woman of deep and piety and devotion and of loyalty to her family, her Bible and religion. She for many years taught the Bible class in the Sunday School at Gaza. Early in life she became a Christian and was a member of the Friends' church. Later when the congregational church was organized at Gaza with her husband united as charter members, of which she was a member at the time of her departure.

On November 28th, she was stricken with an attack of gall-stones, and on the following day was taken to the Ward Hospital in Primghar. From the first there was little hopes of her recovery, but she rallied and for a time it seemed she was improving, but suffered a relapse last Friday from which she suffered greatly, but passed peacefully to rest on Tuesday, Dec, 12th, at one o'clock.

A beautiful life is ended, a kind and devoted mother has left us for the better land. We shall miss her yet we rejoice that she has gone to her eternal reward and that her sufferings are over. There survive to mourn her loss, five children: Charlie and Leon, of Pukwana, S. Dak.; Arthur, Rosette and Lena at home, besides two brothers, Grant and Albert of Concordia, Kansas; one grandchild, Irene, and numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted on Thursday afternoon at the Gaza church in charge of Rev. C.V. Lannholm, the pastor assisted by Rev. L.M. Pierce of Primghar. Pallbearers were J. Fisch, H.B. Lake, Hans Peterson, N.C. Wilkinson, Jas. Conn and Andrew Moorhead. Interment was made in Highland cemetery.
