Leonard O. Gries

Leonard O. Gries, 63, of Cherokee, died Saturday, January 4, 1997, in Marian Health Center at Sioux City, following a sudden illness. He had previously been a resident of Larrabee for many years. Services were held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Trinity Lutheran Church at Cherokee. Pastor Daniel Quinn officiated. Burial was in the Waterman Cemetery at Sutherland. A family prayer service was held at 10:15 Wednesday, Jan. 8, in the church. Visitation was held at the Greenwood Funeral Home at Cherokee which was in charge of arrangements.

He was born Oct. 21, 1933, in Cherokee, to Edward and Mildred Johnson Gries. He lived near Larrabee and attended Larrabee High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. Following his military service, he worked for many area farmers and also was employed at the elevator at Calumet. He also worked for Lundell Manufacturing in Cherokee. He then moved to Denver, Colo., where he met and married his first wife, Cheryl.
On June 25, 1976, he married Shirley Koch in Elk Point, S.D. In 1972, Leonard began working for Wilson Foods, Inc., until his retirement in April 1996. He lived in Larrabee from 1977 to 1990, moving to Cherokee in 1990.

He is survived by: his wife, Shirley, of Cherokee; one son, Donovan of Wheatridge, Colorado; one step-daughter, Brenda, and her husband, Terry Lindgren, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one stepson, T. Sgt. Kelvin Koch and his wife, Donna, of San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren, [redacted]; his mother, Mrs. Mildred Gries of Cherokee; five brothers, Vern, and his wife, Alverta, of Larrabee; Junior and his wife, Clarice, of Neosho, Mo.; Marlin and his wife, Karen, of Marcus; Gerry and his wife, Vicky, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Denny and his wife, Ann, of Holstein; four sisters, Gen Stewart of Fulda, Minn.; Evelyn and her husband, Arvid Wehler, of Arvada, Colo.; Marleen and her husband, Don Pearson, of Everly; and Linda Webb of Chicago, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his father; a daughter, Stacy Gries in 1990; and a step-daughter, Malinda Koch in 1987; and a brother-in-law Don Stewart.
