Jochum Leth was born in Schoenberg, Germany, December 11, 1849. As a young man he came to Amrica in 1867 and became engaged in farm work in the vicinity of Durant. In 1878 he became married to Wilhelmine Huechendorf. Eight children came to bless this union, one of which died in infancy.

In 1886 the Leths moved to O'Brien county and settled in the vicinity of Hartley. In 1898 the family had to experience the loss of the wife and mother.

For the past ten years, Mr. Leth had been a resident of Hartley. In 1912 he married Eliese Muhlhardt. After a brief period of illness due to cancer, he passed away on Thursday morning, January 18, having attained the age of 73 years, 1 month and 7 days.

Funeral services were held from the hom on Sunday afternoon, Rev. Albrecht officiating. The deceased is survived by his wife, Eliesa Leth, three sons, Gustan, Emil and Albert, all of Hartley vicinity; three daughters: Mrs Herman Hoop of Kingsley, Mrs. Leo Steuck of Hartley and Mrs. Richard Jurgens of Ward, S.D.; a step daughter, Mrs. Wessel Hesse of Sutherland; two sisters, Mrs. William Miller of Durant and Mrs. Hans Nissen of Shelby; one brother, Henry Leth of Durant, and thirteen grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. P. Muhs, departed this life in 1919.
