Jacob William Nellis, the second son born to Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Nellis, was born at Ames, Iowa, October 3, 1886, and passed away after a stroke of oppoplexy at 6:30 p.m. on April 10, 1923, at the age of 56 years, 6 months and 7 days, at his home in Harrison township, Osceola county, Iowa.
When about five years of age, he moved with his parents to a homestead near Yankton, South Dakota, where he lived until 1885 when he came to Cherokee county, Iowa. On January 18, 1894, he was united in marriage with Miss Emma Robson. This union was blessed by two sons, Ernest and Mearl. In 1911, the family settled on a farm in Harrison township, Osceola county, Iowa, which has since been his home.
When a young man, he united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Yankton, South Dakota.
He is survived by his wwife, Mrs. Emma Nellis; his two sons, Ernest Nellis of Dickenson county, Iowa, and Mearl, who lives at home; two grandchildren, Opal and Lorna Nellis; also by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Henry Kimball of Platte, South Dakota, Addan Nellis of Monowi, Nebraska, Mrs. Lewis Maxon, Herbert Nellis and Mrs Bert Hewett, all of Wakonda, South Dakota, Frank Nellis of Avon, South Dakota and Bennett Nellis and Mrs. Clyde Lovejoy, both of Wakonda, South Dakota.
Funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 and at the Methodist Episcopal church in Hartley at 2:30 on Friday afternoon and the remains were laid to rest in the Hartley cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. A.J. Barkley, pastor of the Hartley Methodist Episcopal church, who took 1 Cor. 15-58 as a text. The music was by a mixed quartet composed of Mrs. B.R. Boldt, Miss Bertha Linder, W.R. Wagner and Paul Geyer, accompanied by Mrs. Roy Werts.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Oscar Nellis of Vermillion, South Dakota; Addan Nellis, Mowoi, Nebraska; Mrs. Gertie Nellis, Wakonda, South Dakota, and Frank Nellis, Avon, South Dakota.
