Sandra Kay (Berntson) Rentschler (1942-2009)

Sandra K. (Berntson) Rentschler of Horton, Michigan passed away October 24,2009 at her home surrounded by family.

She was born April 22, 1942 in her farm home near Paullina, Iowa to Curtiss and Uneva (Holck) Berntson. She was baptized and confirmed in the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina. She attended Paullina Public School, graduating in 1960. Sandra was very active in the school and church activities, especially music. She was a Red Cross swimming instructor at Lake Paullina for several summers and was also a lifeguard. She also taught swimming and was a counselor at a girl's camp near Boulder, Colorado for a summer.

She attended the University of Northern Iowa graduating in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and earned her Masters Degree in 1969 from Michigan State University. She was Homecoming Queen in her senior year of High School and Beauty Queen of her class in College.

Her teaching career included one year near Davenport, Iowa, Junior High English at Hunt Middle School, Baker College and Adult Education for Jackson Public Schools.

It was in Jackson that she met her future husband, Philip Rentschler, D.D.S. They were married August 10, 1968 in First United Methodist Church in Jackson. Two sons, Mark and Brian were born to this union. Phil preceded her in death on August 11, 2008.

She was past president of the "Diggers Garden Club" and a former 4H Co-Leader for horses in the late 70's. Sandy was a member of the choir in the First United Methodist Church for over 40 years and sang with them at Carnegie Hall in August. She was a very friendly, outgoing person with a beautiful smile for
everyone and she loved to travel.

Sandy is survived by her two sons, Mark (Laurie) Rentschler of Paw Paw, Michigan and Brian Rentschler of Horton, Michigan; two granddaughters, Amanda and Kate; her parents, Curt and Uneva Berntson of Paullina, Iowa; three brothers, David Berntson of Paullina, Iowa, Gene (Jane) Berntson of West Des Moines, Iowa and Eric (Amy) Berntson of Sioux City, Iowa; longtime friend, Joyce Kesterson; several nieces and nephews; and many cousins and friends.

A memorial service to honor the life of Mrs. Sandra K. Rentschler was held at the First United Methodist Church in Jackson on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 11-00 A.M. with the Rev. Edward Ross officiating.
