Funeral services for Orlo Howard Smith, 66, were held Saturday. Smith died at 10 a.m. Thursday of cancer after being in failing health for about seven months. He was returned to Estherville Wednesday from a Sioux City Hospital.
Mr. Smith was born March 4, 1895 at Ireton, the son of Mr and Mrs. George Smith. He received his education in rural O'Brien and Paullina public schools.
On May 1, 1917, he was married to Adalma Harris at Paullina, and the couple farmed in the Paullina area for 41 years. They moved to Estherville on Feb. 20, 1958 and Mr. Smith was associated with King Construction Co. for two years prior to his retirement.
He was past president of the O'Brien County Farm Bureau and was a director of the O'Brien! County Farmers Mutual Insurance Association. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Estherville, past master of the Masonic Lodge of Paullina, member of the North Star Lodge, A.F & A.M., of Etherville, a member and past worthy patron of the Sweet Brier Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star of Paullina, member and worthy guard of Bethel Shrine of Estherville, and past president of the Paullina Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, Merrill of Spencer and Winton of Sargeant Bluff, Minn. and eight grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Clarence of Estherville and Marvin of Paullina. He was preceeded in death by his parents and a brother.
Family services were held at 10:30 Saturday at the Sternborg-Reese Chapel and public services at 2 p.m. at the First Methodist Church in Estherville. The Rev S. E. Polovina of Sioux City officiated. Masonic rites were conducted by the Estherville North Star Lodge. Burial was in East Side Cemetery, there.
